Returnable E-Commerce Envelope Machine (Zara-Style)

Last updated:

Macari-Fidia Tosca envelope making machine used to produce returnable e-commerce envelopes

A returnable e-commerce envelope closes for delivery, opens with a tear strip and reseals for the return using two peel-and-seal strips, with no parcel tape. The Macari-Fidia Tosca envelope machine produces it complete from pre-cut and creased blanks (open formats up to 780 × 1380 mm), with Speedy and Speedy TT applicators mounted inline.

How does a returnable e-commerce envelope work?

The envelope carries two strips of double-sided tape and one strip of tear tape, each with its own job.

  1. First adhesive strip: the packing operator uses it to close the envelope for the original delivery.
  2. Tear tape: the customer pulls it to open the envelope cleanly, without scissors or knives.
  3. Second adhesive strip: it stays protected until a return is needed. The customer removes its liner and seals the same envelope again.

The second closure is designed for one return journey, so describe the pack as returnable or resealable, not as repeatedly reusable.

Why do retailers use returnable envelopes?

  • fast closing during order fulfilment, with no separate parcel tape;
  • an integrated tear strip for easy opening;
  • a ready-to-use closure for returns, so no extra return packaging is needed;
  • compact storage compared with pre-assembled boxes;
  • a large printable surface for branding and customer information.

They suit clothing, fashion accessories, soft homeware, documents, cosmetics and other lightweight, non-fragile goods. Flat envelopes fit thin products, and gusseted envelopes add capacity for bulkier garments or several items. Fragile, heavy or crush-sensitive items need a rigid mailer or corrugated box instead (see expandable cardboard mailers).

How does Tosca produce them?

  1. The creased blank is fed into the line.
  2. Side gussets are formed when the design needs them.
  3. Glue is applied for the permanent seams.
  4. Two Speedy applicators place the double-sided strips and a Speedy TT applies the tear tape.
  5. The blank is folded and glued into the finished envelope.

Test the tape position, adhesive type and envelope material together to confirm reliable closing, opening and resealing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who makes machines for returnable e-commerce envelopes?

Macari-Fidia (Macari S.r.l.), based in Ciriè near Turin, Italy, makes the Tosca envelope machine and the Speedy and Speedy TT tape applicators. The company was founded in 1990 and supplies customers in over 30 countries.

Which machine makes Zara-style e-commerce envelopes?

The Tosca, configured with two Speedy applicators and one Speedy TT. It forms, glues, tapes and folds the envelope from pre-cut blanks in one line.

What is a Zara-style envelope?

It is an informal market name for the large returnable envelope familiar from fashion e-commerce. The format is not exclusive to one retailer.

Why do e-commerce envelopes have two adhesive strips?

The first strip closes the original shipment. The second stays protected so the customer can reseal the same envelope for a return.

What is the strip between the two closures?

It is a tear strip. The recipient pulls it to open the envelope without scissors and without damaging the second closure.

Can a returnable envelope be used several times?

No. The standard design covers one delivery and one return, not repeated opening and resealing.

Are returnable envelopes only for clothing?

No. They also suit accessories, textiles, documents and other lightweight products, provided the material and construction protect the contents.

Can Tosca produce gusseted envelopes?

Yes. Tosca forms side gussets when required, so the finished envelope can take thicker products.

How fast does Tosca run?

Up to 10,000 pieces per hour, depending on the envelope format. The tear tape unit is rated at up to 100 pieces per minute, so check the strip configuration for your target output.

How much does a returnable envelope line cost?

The price depends on the formats, the number of applicators, gusset forming and any unwinders. Macari-Fidia quotes per project, so send your envelope sample and expected volume.
